Sol-gel is a synthetic technique used for intimately mixing reactants. Soluble salts are dissolved in a solution, and then the solvent is boiled off, resulting in a solid precipitate containing the reagents, known as a gel. Typically, salts with benign decomposition products like acetates are used. The gel can then be fired, encouraging the chemical reaction to occur.
